These services are filled through the UPSC Civil Services Examination conducted every year.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination selection process is conducted in three stages to select candidates for various civil services posts:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):
    An objective-type screening test consisting of two papers—General Studies and CSAT. Marks obtained in Prelims are not counted for the final merit but are used to shortlist candidates for the Mains examination.

  2. Main Examination (Mains):
    A descriptive written examination comprising multiple papers that assess a candidate’s academic knowledge, analytical ability, and writing skills. Marks of the Mains are counted for the final merit.

  3. Personality Test (Interview):
    Candidates who qualify the Mains are called for an interview to evaluate personality traits, leadership qualities, decision-making skills, and suitability for a career in civil services.
